Chapter 25

Jasmine walked into the XAV research facility hangar with Dutch and McKinzie walking close behind. She walked over to Captain Mitchell, Gabriella, and Naomi standing next to XAV2.

Jasmine looked at Captain Mitchell.

“Andrea, I need Dutch and McKinzie in AR with us. Can you get the techs to hook them up so we can all speak to Johnny together?”

Captain Mitchell looked at Jasmine, her eyes red and watering. She spoke softly.

“Are we going to mount a rescue operation? Is there really only one survivor?”

Jasmine put a hand on Captain Mitchell’s shoulder.

“Alpha, I need you to be strong and focused right now. Can you handle organizing the techs?”

Captain Mitchell sniffed and wiped her nose.

“Yeah…sorry…I’m on it.”

Captain Mitchell walked off towards the XAV technicians.

Jasmine looked at McKinzie and Dutch.

“We’re going to stand in a circle between those cameras so the AI can see us. We’ll meet you there.”

McKinzie nodded and walked over to the circle between the cameras followed by Dutch, leaving Jasmine, Gabriella, and Naomi standing by themselves.

Naomi elbowed Jasmine, pointed at Gabriella’s boots, and whispered.

“Hey…check it out!”

Jasmine looked to see Gabriella in tactical combat boots.

Gabriella had her sidearm and knife clipped to the nylon belt of her jeans partially concealed by a light jacket.

Jasmine raised an eyebrow and whispered.

“You changed?”

Gabriella replied in a whisper.

“You said be ready to roll! We’re parked over there.”

Gabriella gestured towards the large opening of the hangar entrance where the Range Rover was backed in alongside Naomi’s bike.

Naomi whispered to Jasmine.

“You invoked provision 3, right? Seems like everything’s fine.”

Jasmine shook her head.

“Harrison’s going to support us, but let’s not assume everyone else on the base is.”

Gabriella looked at Jasmine curiously.

“Support us doing what?”

Jasmine looked at Gabriella, then at Naomi, then back to Gabriella.

“I need you both to not react.”

Gabriella and Naomi nodded.

“I’m going to use the C-17 I flew in on to transport XAV2 to confront XAV1 in the field.”

Gabriella and Naomi froze.

Jasmine looked concerned.

“So…what…what do you guys think?”

Gabriella whispered.

“You told us not to react!”

Jasmine sighed.

“OK, look, the way I see it is…”

An XAV technician walked up to Jasmine, handed her an AR headset, and spoke.

“Everyone is ready when you are.”

Jasmine took a deep breath, held it, then exhaled.

“Alright, let’s just get on with it.”

Jasmine led the way to the area between the mounted cameras. Naomi and Gabriella followed, and together, they completed the circle with McKinzie, Dutch, and Captain Mitchell.

The research hangar door was flung open and slammed against the wall.

Spuddy stormed into the hangar. He walked quickly, heading directly towards Jasmine.

Naomi whispered to Jasmine.

“That’s Spuddy—the XO.”

Jasmine whispered to the group.

“Everyone—be cool.”

Jasmine spoke to one of the XAV technicians.

“Can you make sure the XO also has an AR headset please.”

The XAV technician looked at Spuddy nervously as he approached, then retrieved an AR headset from one of the nearby cases. As Spuddy neared Jasmine, the technician offered Spuddy the headset.

Spuddy looked at the AR headset, then at the technician, then snatched the headset forcibly from the technician’s hands. The technician hurried off.

Spuddy glared at Jasmine.

“Are you Agent Washington?”

Jasmine replied calmly.
